William H. Dutton

Director of the Portulans Institute

William H. Dutton is Director of the Portulans Institute, and a Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) and the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford, where he supports Oxford’s Global Centre for Cyber Security Capacity (GCSCC). As a social scientist focused on the Internet, Bill was the founding director of the OII, and the first Professor of Internet Studies at Oxford University. Bill is also an Emeritus Professor at the University of Southern California and is a Visiting Professor at Leeds University. His most recent book is The Fifth Estate: The Power Shift of the Digital Age (OUP 2023).
